What is FTTC?

Fibre to the Cabinet

FTTC stands for Fibre to the Cabinet. This means that fibre optic cables deliver Internet from the local exchange to your nearest street cabinet. Fibre optic cables are not impacted by external factors that could hamper speed, such as weather. However, despite it's name, copper telephone lines then deliver connectivity from your nearest street cabinet into your premises. As a result, you gain access to increased speeds as the distance the data travels over copper wires is reduced, however part of the network journey remains vulnerable to external influences.
How Fibre broadband works

How do Fibre Optic Cables work?

Fibre-optic cables utilise this by using cladding to enable data to bounce off the walls of the cable rather than leaking like traditional legacy copper wire does. As a result, very little of the signal is lost providing greater stability of connection and access to faster speeds. Fibre Optic Cable is only utilised for part of the journey with FTTC. Benefits of FTTC:

Ideal step up from ADSL broadband

FTTC offers the ideal step up from ADSL broadband. ADSL speeds max out at 24Mbit/s, whereas FTTC speeds reach up to 76Mbit/s.

Availability

FTTC is available to roughly 98% of the country, meaning it is a readily available service for the majority of customers.

Affordable

FTTC set up costs are minimal and monthly rentals are highly affordable.

Unlimited Users

There is no restriction on the number of devices than can be connected to FTTC broadband at one time, although speeds may be reduced if there are a high number of users using the service at one time.

What is the difference between Fibre (FTTC) and Full Fibre (FTTP)?

Fibre (FTTC) speeds top out at 76Mbps, whilst Full Fibre (FTTP) speeds start from 140Mbps. With Fibre, fibre optic cables carry data to your local cabinet then legacy copper wire carries data to your premises. This is where FTTC differs from FFTP, as with FTTP/Full Fibre, fibre optic cable carries data for its entire journey.
